Spring 2010 Continuing Education Workshops
at Demopolis Higher Education Center


Through a partnership with the Division of Educational Outreach, the Center for the Study of the Black Belt offers Continuing Education Workshops for the public at Demopolis Higher Education Center.  Arts and crafts, traditional music, studies of local Native American culture, and other topics are offered by experienced experts.


Fees vary depending on the materials necessary for each class. Registration is due one week before the workshop.


Stained Glass
Wednesday-Friday, Jan. 6-8, 5:30-9 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 9, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Learn the Tiffany method from instructor John Hogarth. All tools and materials are supplied, but students should bring their own safety glasses.
Cost for ages 18 and up: $255

Flower Arranging
Tuesdays, Jan. 19-Feb. 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Instructor Kaye Evans will teach the fundamentals of floral design, including proper handling, needed materials, and beautiful techniques. Participants will take home an arrangement each week.
Cost for ages 18 and up: $60 plus materials

Beginning to Intermediate Bridge
Mondays, Jan. 25-March 1, 6:30–8:30 p.m.
Learn from instructor Tannda Elliot the basics of the classic card game or improve your strategic playing skills.
Cost for ages 18 and up: $75

Container Gardening
Tuesday, Feb. 9, 3:30-5:30 p.m. or 6:30 -8:30 p.m.
Horticulturist Barbara Blevins will teach container and plant selection, landscape design, and care for container gardening on even the smallest patio or porch.
No charge for ages 12 and up

Acrylic Painting
Tuesdays, Feb. 16-March 30, 6:30–8:30 p.m.
Artists of all levels will learn from instructor Kirk Brooker essential techniques, helpful tips and step-by-step instructions for acrylic painting.
Cost for ages 18 and up: $75

Frugal Living
Mondays, March 8 and 15, 6:30–8:30 p.m.
In this free class, instructor Dianne Lehning will teach money management skills for spending less, paying off debt and saving for emergencies or retirement.
No charge for this class.
